Michigan & Community Information

Michigan is truly a unique place to visit and live

The name Michigan is a French adaptation of the Ojibwe term mishigami, meaning “large water” or “great lake”.  Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world, surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes. Michigan ranked third for number of registered recreational boats in 2005. Michigan also have 12,000 inland lakes, offering many opportunities to swim, fish, boat or just relax on the beach. A person is never more than six miles (10 km) from a natural water source, or more than 87.2 miles (137 km) from Great Lakes coastline.

Michigan offers a wide range of recreational activities from sailing on the beautiful blue waters of  the Great Lakes to snowmobiling in Northern Michigan, camping in the beautiful state parks to visiting the many world-renowned wineries (more wineries) in and around Traverse City.  Enjoy world-class skiing or golfing at any one of the beautiful resorts throughout Michigan. Michigan offers many miles of ORV/ATV trails.
